Star goalkeeper Savita Punia headlines the returnees as Hockey India named a 24-member Indian women’s squad for the upcoming tour of Argentina, scheduled to be held in Buenos Aires from April 13 to 17.

The four-match exposure series against a top Argentine side comes at a crucial juncture for India, with the FIH Hockey World Cup 2026 and the Asian Games on the horizon. The tour is expected to play a key role in shaping combinations and building match readiness ahead of a packed international calendar.

Midfielder Salima Tete continues as captain, bringing leadership, composure and energy to the side. One of the major talking points, however, is the return of forward Deepika, who rejoins the squad after a period of rehabilitation. Her comeback strengthens India’s drag-flicking department significantly ahead of a demanding season.

In Deepika’s absence, players such as Navneet Kaur, Manisha Chauhan, Udita and Annu stepped up impressively, with Annu particularly catching the eye with her drag-flicking abilities during the qualifiers. With Deepika back, the team gains added balance and depth in attack.
Navneet Kaur, in particular, has grown into a key figure over the past year and is expected to play a central role in India’s plans going forward.

Savita’s return between the posts adds immense experience and stability to the defensive unit. One of India’s most accomplished goalkeepers, her presence will be vital against a strong Argentine attack. During her absence in the qualifiers, Bichu Devi impressed with her composure and sharp reflexes, ensuring healthy competition in the goalkeeping department.
The squad also sees the return of defender Jyoti and forward Mumtaz Khan, both of whom missed the qualifiers, further strengthening the team.

Among the consistent performers, Baljeet Kaur has stood out with her pace and attacking intent, establishing herself as a reliable goal-scoring option. Midfielder Vaishnavi Vitthal Phalke has also impressed with her energy, control and forward movement, making her a key presence in the middle of the park.

Young talents Rutuja Dadaso Pisal, Ishika and Sakshi Rana continue to be players to watch. Their development and exposure against a top side like Argentina will be closely monitored as India looks to build a strong core for the future.

Speaking on the squad announcement, Marijne said, “This tour is a valuable opportunity for us to give more players international exposure and test them against a very strong opponent like Argentina. It’s important for us to build depth within the squad, and experiences like these help young players understand the demands of top-level hockey while also giving us a chance to test out various combinations.”

India will play four matches against Argentina on April 13, 14, 16, and 17.
